Nokia unfazed by Windows Phone 8 block for existing Lumia handsets,

 Nokia believes that the lack of an upgrade path to Windows Phone 8 shouldn't perturb customers from investing in its current Lumia line-up.

Microsoft's announcement that existing 7.5 devices would not get the Apollo operating system dealt a huge blow to owners of handsets like the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 900.

Those handsets will receive a scaled-back Windows Phone 7.8 update, which will bring new features like the new Start screen and three Live Tile sizes, but the full monty will be reserved for new devices.

Nokia's SVP of Program and Product Management, Kevin Shields says this will be 'more than enough' to keep consumers happy and ensure a long lifetime for the devices, so crucial to its recovery.
Customers 'unaware of upgrade thing'

He told The Verge: "I definitely think it's more than enough. I think that ultimately your typical customer probably isn't all that aware of this upgrade thing.

"I definitely think with products like the Lumia 900, where a consumer walks in and buys that product they're getting great value and they're getting a great offering that's gonna have a long lifetime of innovation."

The feeling among many observers was that Microsoft's decision turned the handsets into 'lame ducks,' with little incentive for consumers to splash out on a device that has no route to the newest software.

Shields says that along with Windows Phone 7.8, Nokia is continually working on innovative new apps tailored for the Lumia devices to ensure everything stays fresh.

He says he has 'no problem' recommending the Lumia 900 to users, but then he would, wouldn't he? And, for a company positioning itself as a rival to Apple and Android, to suggest most customers don't care about software upgrades sounds a little naive.

This isn't exactly the best week ever for Community Education Centers, a private company that operates halfway houses, prisons and "re-entry centers" in seventeen states. On Sunday, the New York Times began running a three-part series on the company's alarming record of escapes, assaults, gang activity and drugs at its New Jersey facilities, the result of a ten-month investigation into CEC and its political ties to Governor Chris Christie. If it all sounds a little déjà vu, it may be because CEC has had some troubles at the Cheyenne Mountain Re-Entry Center it runs in Colorado Springs.

Four years ago, Westword interviewed a number of officials, residents and graduates of the CMRC, an innovative but controversial effort to provide state inmates with a smoother transition to life back on the street. The staff dress like motivational coaches rather than prison guards; the "residents" (not inmates) live in spartan dorms rather than cells and engage in a lot of peer-driven confrontations about behaviors and attitudes.

Critics of the program said the talk of life changes was so much window dressing for a poorly supervised operation plagued by assaults, high turnover among staff, gangs and drug use. Our article, "Con School," found some success stories and plenty of disgruntled customers, as well as DOC inspection reports that suggested some of the classes observed were staged for the inspectors' benefit.

CEC senior vice president William Palatucci acknowledged that the Cheyenne Mountain facility had been through "some growing pains." The Times reports that Palatucci and Governor Christie are close friends, once worked at the same law firm, and may have both lobbied on behalf of CEC while at that firm.

TORONTO — The first BlackBerry device running Research In Motion Ltd.’s new operating software will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one.

The BlackBerry 10 software will be offered on devices with physical keyboards in the future, but RIM spokeswomen Rebecca Freiburger declined to say when. RIM is expected to start selling BlackBerry 10 touch-screen devices this year.

Top-selling smartphones these days, including Apple Inc.’s iPhone and several running Google’s Android software, also lack physical keyboards. But RIM’s attempts in the past to offer touch-only phones have largely flopped.

Many corporate users have stuck with the BlackBerry solely because of its physical keyboard, given a perception that it’s harder to type emails on a touch screen. The BlackBerry 10 system has already been delayed about a year, and with additional delays to get a physical keyboard, those people may not be willing to wait any longer, especially as the iPhone makes greater in-roads in corporate settings. Those users may simply get the new iPhone expected this fall.

RIM’s hopes hang on the BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience customers now demand. The Canadian company is preparing to launch the new software later this year, just as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android devices.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, called it puzzling that RIM isn’t leading with its strength by releasing a keyboard BlackBerry first.

“The physical keyboard is the most dominant item that separates out Research In Motion from its competitors,” Gillis said. “If you are not playing to your historical strengths you may find it more difficult to get traction.”

Gillis said there is a spot in the market for RIM but the company “just got to get it together.”

But Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said BlackBerry 10 is all about touch and closing the gap with Apple, so people should not be surprised that the initial model will have only a touch screen.

“They are going to build a BlackBerry device with a keyboard, but it’s just going to take longer,” Misek said. “Maybe it will come a month or two after, but frankly it might be already too late.”

RIM once dominated the corporate smartphone market but failed to adapt to the emerging “bring your own device” trend, in which employees use their personal iPhones or Android devices for work instead of relying on BlackBerrys issued by their employers. As the movement caught on, the iPhone made the BlackBerry look ancient.

RIM’s future is far from certain as its flagship devices rapidly lose market share to flashier phones. With more than $2 billion in cash, bankruptcy seems unlikely in the near term. But RIM’s U.S. share of the smartphone market fell sharply from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011 according to market researcher NPD Group.

RIM said Wednesday it has started laying off employees as part of a restructuring plan aimed at saving about $1 billion this year.

iPhone 5: What's Up With the Dock?


In 2003, the third-generation iPod debuted with a 30-pin dock. That basic design has been used on iPods, and eventually iPhones, ever since. But with the arrival of the next iPhone, Apple may introduce a new dock design. That could provide some design advantages to the upcoming handset, but it could also leave customers and third-party device makers in the lurch.

When Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) next iPhone hits the market, users may notice something different about the device -- something that so far hasn't changed in Apple's iPod/iPhone line for nearly a decade.

The company will switch from the iPhone's current 30-pin port to a 19-pin port, according to TechCrunch. The basic 30-pin dock connector debuted in the third-generation iPod in 2003 and has since been featured in every model of full-sized iPod and iPhone. The reported new design would make the dock smaller and more similar to universal micro USB cables.

"The current design has been more of a legacy design left over from the iPod," Wayne Lam, senior analyst at IHS iSuppli, told MacNewsWorld. "Apple is starting to think of the iPhone as an iPhone, a separate entity from the iPod."

Apple has not revealed when the next iPhone will launch, although it has begun previewing iOS 6, the latest version of its mobile operating system. The iPhone 4S was released last October.

Apple did not respond to our request for comment on the story.

The flexibility that comes with a design change could lead to significant advantages for Apple and its customers, said Lam.

"They can try to double the functionality of the cord," he told MacNewsWorld. "They could do something to create a data port, and it could also help to improve the speed."

A smaller, more universal dock could also lead to an improved iPhone, Colin Gibbs, analyst at GigaOM Pro, told MacNewsWorld. As customers demand more computing and entertainment capabilities from their phones, manufacturers struggle to make the devices smaller yet more powerful.

"Manufacturers and developers are constantly trying to pack as much technology as possible inside mobile phones, so that space is very precious real estate," he said. "Less space for a dock means more space for radio chips, processors, etc."

A dock redesign could also help the iPhone meet European standards. Last December, the EU passed new regulations requiring cellphone vendors to make their phones connectable via micro USB. At the time, Apple didn't alter the iPhone design, but it began selling a micro USB adapter to comply with the rule.
Selling the Pros

The switch could also lead to resentment among the Apple faithful. The 30-pin port has been a standard in Apple mobile products since the third generation of the iPod. Since then, third-party accessory manufacturers have created thousands of speaker sets, car chargers, battery packs and other devices designed to use iPods and iPhones in a variety of ways via the established 30-pin port.

In addition to customers upset that their accessories could be rendered obsolete, the companies that produce those gadgets might be apprehensive about a makeover as well, Gibbs said.

"The people who are really concerned right now are manufacturers of Apple accessories, because they have no idea whether their current inventories will be worth anything when the new iPhone is unveiled," he explained.

Despite Apple's tendency to shield its products in a veil of secrecy, the company might clue in those manufacturers before the next iPhone's launch, Lam said.

"Everyone would be sworn to secrecy, but that's a possibility," said Lam. "The port redesign is a little less interesting than the overall design, but it does affect this industry of accessories makers, and Apple might decide to let them know ahead of time."

With manufacturers on board, Apple will also have to win over its loyal user base, who might be quick to critique the decision as the next iPhone hits the market, said Lam. Apple will have taken that into consideration, he noted, and if the rumors are true about a dock size change, it is probably for good reason. Like they did in Europe, the company might also release an adapter that would allow the devices to function with the old ports, said Gibbs.

"There have to be some compelling advantages so that people are able to live with the changes," said Lam. "This is a company that can't afford to alienate their users, and that is definitely something that factors into their design."
