Samsung Galaxy S3 most popular UK phone,


The Samsung Galaxy S3 has unceremoniously tipped Apple’s once-untouchable iPhone off the top spot as the UK’s most popular smartphone.
 
 Just days after its UK launch the Galaxy S3 has topped the uSwitch Tech’s Mobile Tracker, replacing the white iPhone 4S. See also: Group test: What's the best smartphone?

The price-comparison website’s Mobile Tracker ranks handsets based on live searches and sales.

The smartphone war is clearly set between the two main phone makers: Samsung and Apple. The iPhone 4S had only briefly replaced the Samsung Galaxy S2, last month. The Android-powered S2 remains at number 3, despite the arrival of its successor, and there are two other Galaxy handsets (Ace phone and Note "phablet") in the top ten.

Apple’s older iPhone 4 still places in the mobile league table.

uSwitch’s Ernest Doku forecasts that the “one-two punch” of the S2 and S3 augur well for continued strong showings for Samsung in the Mobile Tracker.

“Feeling surprisingly light to carry due to its brushed polycarbonate casing, especially considering the vast 4.8 Super AMOLED screen, the Samsung S III looks set to give the iPhone a serious run for its money,” Doku said when announcing the new smartphone ranking.

Behind the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy handsets is the HTC One Series mobile, three of which appear in the top ten, leaving just Sony hanging on in the Samsung/Apple/HTC smartphone domination.

Nokia emerges leader in Sri Lanka mobile phone market,

 The Sri Lanka mobile phones market recorded sales of over 2 million units in CY 2011, CyberMedia Research.



In its Sri Lanka Mobile Handsets Market Review 2011, June 2012 released on Monday the New Delhi based IT and Telecoms market intelligence firm said that the total value of the mobile phones shipped in the Sri Lanka market during CY 2011 aggregated to LKR 22.4 Billion (US$ 202.7 million).



In the overall Sri Lanka mobile handsets market, Nokia emerged as the market leader with a 46% share, followed by Samsung at second position with 22% and Micromax at third position with 16%, in terms of unit sales during CY 2011.



Multi-SIM mobile handset shipments accounted for 35% of the total Sri Lanka mobile handsets market during CY 2011. Micromax emerged market leader in the category with a 37.3% share of unit shipments in CY 2011, followed by Nokia and Samsung with 24.6% and 15.9% shares, respectively.



Sri Lanka, the first country in South Asia to introduce 3G services in August 2006, is poised for significant growth in its telecommunications sector, buoyed by the end of the civil war in 2009.



Total 3G phone shipments in Sri Lanka touched nearly 0.32 million units during CY 2011. Nokia emerged as the market leader in this category with a 53.2% share of units shipped, followed by Samsung and Sony Ericsson with 25.6% and 7.7%, respectively.



"With the spread of 3G services to all major cities Sri Lanka consumers would look to acquire and use more feature rich mobile handsets, thus fueling greater demand for higher generation air interface devices. This is an opportunity that vendors and service providers can exploit by bringing to market attractive value for money device plus service packages", said Naveen Mishra, Lead Analyst, CMR Telecoms Practice.



Smartphone shipments touched 0.11 million units in Sri Lanka during calendar year 2011. Samsung emerged as the leader in the smartphone segment with a 27.6% share of shipments in CY 2011, followed by Nokia with 25.4%. HTC occupied third place with an 11.4% market share.



The Average Selling Values of smartphones during CY 2011 was LKR 45,350 (US$ 410). Android emerged as the leading smartphone OS with a 49.9% share of shipments in 2011.



"Going forward, vendors would do well to introduce handsets that support Sinhalese, as Sri Lanka would be a natural market for the same. Further, given the wet and humid climatic conditions that prevail in most parts of the country for most of the year, there could be a latent demand for water and moisture resistant handsets", stated Tarun Pathak, Analyst, CMR Telecoms Practice.



"With increasing operator focus on data revenues and better 3G coverage the share of smartphones is likely to increase and consequently the number of models on offer from smartphone vendors are also expected to go up in 2012", Tarun added.

BlackBerry still cool to SA youth

 BlackBerry has been voted as the “Coolest Brand Overall” in SA for the second year running in the Sunday Times Generation Next 2012 Brand Survey Awards. Announced at an event last week, BlackBerry also took top honours in the “Coolest Cellphone” and “Coolest High-Tech Gadget” categories.

The Generation Next Survey included 5 500 urban and peri-urban young South Africans, aged between eight and 22, and was conducted by HDI Youth Marketeers during February and March.

“The study illustrates young consumers' brand preferences on what they think is 'cool', irrespective of financial constraints, and offers key insight into trends likely to affect brand profit, whether in present or future consumption,” says HDI Youth Marketeers.

Marketing director for SA at Research In Motion (RIM), Lanie Visser, says: “These awards reflect how the BlackBerry smartphone has become an indispensable social tool and lifestyle device for active, connected young South Africans, and we would like to thank our young BlackBerry customers for their continued loyalty."

Cool factor

According to RIM, BlackBerry's local popularity is largely due to the affordability of its BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). “Popular apps such as BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) – which is included in the BIS fee, have also helped to cement BlackBerry's popularity with young people,” says RIM, adding that globally there are over 56 million BBM users. RIM says BBM penetration in SA is among the highest in the world, with 98% of South African BlackBerry customers using BBM.

Rounding out the top five in the “Coolest Brand Overall” category were BMW, Coca-Cola, Nike and Apple. FNB was voted the “Coolest Bank” (followed by Absa and Standard Bank), and Facebook dominated the “Coolest social networking site and Web site” category, with 28% of the vote, followed by Mxit (16.6%), Google+ (9.8%), Whatsapp (8.2%) and Twitter (6.8%). When it comes to computing, Apple took the top spot, followed by Samsung, Sony, HP and LG.

In the “Coolest Cellphone” category, BlackBerry took 36.7% of the vote, followed by Nokia (22.4%), Apple's iPhone (20.3%) and Samsung (8.9%). While BlackBerry was also the “Coolest High-tech Gadget”, with 12.5% of the vote, while runners up were laptops (12.1%), PlayStation 3 (11.7%), the iPad (11%) and the iPod (8.6%).

Addressing demand

In October last year, World Wide Worx (WWW) and Fuseware released a study of the South African social media landscape. The report showed BlackBerry's BBM service was the fastest growing social network for the second half of 2011 in SA.

At the time, WWW MD Arthur Goldstuck said: “The rate of BBM growth is a factor of Blackberry growth – for much of the last quarter, BlackBerry has been taking 70% of the smartphone market in SA, and that has been driven to a large extent by the demand for BBM, along with the low cost of unlimited Internet access on the device.”

Goldstuck says this has meant a growth rate for BBM of about 500% through 2011 and into early 2012. “After that, the momentum will slow down, and it will become a question of how BlackBerry addresses the demand for a more app-friendly phone.”
