Sony Xperia S review

The Sony Xperia S is the firm’s first handset to ship since it bought out Ericsson’s stake in the joint mobile venture earlier this year.

It’s an attractive device with some nice design features, and is likely to become a lot more attractive from April onwards, when the handset is due to be getting an upgrade from the current Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS to the latest release, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Handset build
As soon as you get the Xperia S out the box, you can’t but help notice its shape. Its 128x64x10.6mm dimensions make it longer and narrower than many other handsets on the market, and it’s comparable in size to the HTC Evo 3D.

sony-xperia-s-clear-panelThe handset, available in black or white, is a very angular design with squared off edges rather than the normal rounded version. It has a curved back, which is made out of black plastic.

This design might not suit everyone – we found the phone fine to use for making calls, but more awkward to hold for long periods in landscape mode for typing.

Another key design feature is the clear see-through bar running across the bottom of the handset. This has the Back, Home and Menu icons, although the buttons for these are actually sat above the bar under the screen. The clear bar also houses the radio antenna out of the way, meaning you shouldn’t get the same kind of signal problems that many iPhone users have had in the past.

The Xperia S weighs in at 144g, so it’s at the heavier end of the smartphone set, especially compared to its Android rival the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Touch-screen
The display on the handset is undeniably gorgeous. It’s a 4.3in TFT touchscreen, boasting a resolution of 1280x720 with 16 million colours. As a reference, the iPhone 4S features a 3.5in display with 960x640 resolution while the Samsung Galaxy S II has a Super Amoled 4.3in 800x480 screen.

Watching HD video or viewing photos on the Xperia S, you can really tell what a high-quality display this is, as the picture is sharp and bright. The speedy processor also makes video viewing and web browsing a pleasure, everything was quick to load and very smooth.

Camera
The camera is a real selling point of the Xperia S. It offers a 12.1-megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, facial recognition and auto focus. There are several shooting modes to choose from, including a 3D or normal panoramic image, allowing you to slowly pan around a scene and create extra wide shots. There’s also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

You can shoot HD 1080p video, and watch Adobe Flash files, something you still won’t get on the iPhone. Our test shots were of a high quality, as was the video we shot. There’s also a 3D camera app, but we couldn’t test the shots out properly as we don’t have access to a 3D TV.

Remote Control feature in BlackBerry Bridge 2.0 lets you control your BlackBerry PlayBook with your BlackBerry smartphone

Please welcome Julianna, writing a guest post today on a great new feature of BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 2.0…read on! – Ed.

One of my favorite new features in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is the ability to use my BlackBerry® smartphone to control my BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet. This feature is particularly useful when my BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is connected to an HDMI®-equipped TV. At home, I can control my BlackBerry PlayBook tablet from my couch and have the contents displayed on my TV with the audio output through my home theater system. At a meeting at work, I can apply the same functionality to share documents, web pages, videos, slideshows and more on a large display screen for everyone to see.
If you haven’t tried this feature already, keep reading to learn how you can do this too!

iPhone 5 rumors: Apple's next iPhone might feature 4G LTE

According to reports, Verizon Wireless plans to only introduce devices that support Long Term Evolution (LTE).

In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Verizon Wireless Chief Technical Officer David Small said that the carrier plans to launch only 4G LTE capable smartphones for the remainder of the year.

“By the end of the year, our plan is to be in at least 400 markets across the country,” he added.

Given that the fifth-generation iPhone is expected to debut this year and that the device is known to be Verizon’s number one smartphone, Apple is expected to comply with this rule. Hence a 4G LTE compatible iPhone 5.

Last week, Apple released a 4G LTE-compatible iPad, a move that many saw as a hint to LTE inclusion on the next iPhone.

The iPhone 5 is also expected to feature a quad-core processor, a larger display, an improved battery, a redesigned antenna and a new aluminum casing.
