Vodafone India revamps top management
NEW DELHI: In a revamp exercise of its top management, telecom service provider Vodafone India has appointed Sunil Sood as its new chief operating officer (COO) and Sanjoy Mukherjee as the chief commercial officer (CCO).

The changes are effective from March 1, an official of the company told IANS.

The company has also roped in Rajiv Kohli as director of the North Zone, Sanjay Warke for East Zone, Rohit Adya for West Zone and B.P. Singh for South Zone.

Kumar Ramanathan, the current chief marketing officer, has been moved on to the Africa Middle East and Asia Pacific (AMAP) region.

In an internal communication issued by Vodafone India managing director and chief executive officer Marten Pieters, Vodafone has said the changes are made for "a better balance between operational intensity and the need to focus on emerging areas."

The firm, which has almost 148.6 million subscribers as of Dec 31, got a huge relief earlier this year with the Supreme Court ruling in its favour in the Rs.11,218 crore ($2.2 billion) tax dispute case.

A day after the Supreme Court announced its verdict to cancel 122 licences issued in 2008, the firm had also been the first operator to start initiatives to attract customers.

It launched a promotion campaign in newspapers with the tagline -- Everybody's welcome to the network that you can depend upon -- asking customers to switch over to its network, using the mobile number portability (MNP) service.

Cheaper Blackberry Smartphone Coming Soon?
Research In Motion (RIM) didn't make buzz at the recently concluded all-mobile MWC 2012 in Barcelona, but it doesn't mean they're not coming up with something new to offer their patrons and phone-loving consumers.

According to a report, they're preparing to launch an entry-level smartphone targeted to consumers on a budget.

In addition, a leading technology and gadgets news blog has this tidbit on the new and upcoming Blackberry Curve 9320:

"Research In Motion (RIM) appears to be cookin' yet another smartphone handset to its credit. Rumors leaked that it's going to be called Blackberry 9320, an entry-level smartphone.

Rumored features of the Curve 9320 includes 600 to 800MHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 2.4-inch screen display with 320 x 240 qVGA color resolution.

Other rumored specs of the Blackbery Curve 9320 includes a 3.2-megapixel camera on the back and a dedicated BBM button for instant access to the Blackberry Messenger.

The price of the gadget is rumored to be very affordable for all the budget-conscious consumers. Availability-wise, as the buzz goes, the Blackberry Curve 9320 is going to roll out in India first very soon".

It appears that RIM is now shifting their gear to more affordably-priced phones in hopes to regain market share and make the company become more competitive, as well as to gain customers, in the fast-paced world of smartphone technology.

What do you think the 'iPad 3' will be called?
With the expected announcement of the next-generation iPad now less than a week away, there’s a lot of speculation in the tech media about what Apple will call this new device. iPad 3 seems to be the favorite, but I’ve seen quite a few other names suggested. Personally, I think it will be called iPad 3 but I’ll throw the best of the rest into a poll so you can choose which you think Apple will pick.

What I will say is this. The name is nowhere near as important as pundits make it out to be. I remember at the launch of the iPhone 4S how some in the tech media declared that Apple had killed sales by daring not to call it the iPhone 5. Did the name make a difference? No. What actually happened was that Apple went on to blow away the competition and sell a record number of handsets.

Those of you with long memories will remember that critics made the same comment about the iPad when the name was first announced, commenting on how it was a stupid name and that it sounded like feminine hygiene product. Did the name matter? Not one bit.

Bottom line, Apple could call the iPad 3 anything at all and the device would still sell as fast as they come off the production line.
