Nokia's PureView camera bound for Windows phones

The stunning 41-megapixel camera could arrive once Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8.
March 10, 2012, 7:22 AM — The 41-megapixel camera in Nokia's 808 PureView smartphone stunned the tech world last week, but not the phone itself, which is saddled with an aging Symbian operating system. Fortunately, Nokia says it's bringing the same camera technology to Windows Phones.

Jo Harlow, Nokia's executive vice president of smart devices, told the Finnish newspaper Aamulehti that a Windows Phone with PureView camera technology won't take very long to make, but she wouldn't say precisely when Nokia would release such a device.

As WPCentral speculates, a PureView-powered Windows Phone could arrive once Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8, code-named Apollo.

Microsoft and Nokia would likely have to work together on a software solution for the camera, which uses digital zoom and cropping to shoot sharp pictures even at faraway distances. Although the camera can capture up to 38-megapixel images, most users will want to snap smaller pictures -- say, around 8 megapixels -- using the finer detail as a replacement for optical zoom.

Of course, more megapixels doesn't always mean a better camera, but PCWorld's Ginny Mies got a demo of the 808 PureView at Mobile World Congress and thought the photos looked clean, even in low lighting. Still, with Symbian on board, she said the phone feels “stale, dated, and difficult to use.”

Because the technology has been in the making for five years, Nokia decided to stick with Symbian for the first PureView phone. But with Nokia slowly phasing out Symbian in favor of Windows Phone, the migration of PureView technology to Microsoft's operating system isn't a big surprise.

BlackBerry looks for a fountain of youth and enlists College Humor

RIM has hired College Humor personalities to defend its ailing BlackBerry, but is the appeal to youth enough to save the smartphone maker?

RIM has hired Streeter Seidell and Amir Blumenfeld of College Humor to liven up the image of its troubled BlackBerry line of smartphones and tablets. As part of its “New 2012 Challenge Council Project,” (which sounds like it was named by a foreign language translated random-word generator) the two comedians, best known for their popular web videos, will “shut down BlackBerry trash talk once and for all,” according to the BBM Generation website. As a company that has wrestled with the public perception of its BlackBerry as a device behind the times, RIM’s campaign urges users to “sign up to be the first to know when these guys start putting BlackBerry naysayers on blast.”

Being cool is hard. Microsoft used to take a lot of heat for striving to maintain the status quo with its iterations of Windows and Office, but the company was comfortable in the proverbial navy blue, three-button suit: Nothing flashy, but it got the job done. When Apple unexpectedly rose from a zombie-like state to claim the monopoly on coolness in tech, Microsoft was forced to step up its game. Although things are looking hopeful now — Windows Phone is gaining users everyday, and Windows 8’s Metro interface has the Internet buzzing with the unmitigated ecstasy typically reserved for those certain products that only come in glossy white or black — it was a long road to hipness for Redmond. Remember those Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates buddy commercials that were both too long and extremely unfunny? Hey, you’ve got to crack a few eggs to make an omelette, or an exciting OS in this case.

Which is why it’s so hard to watch BlackBerry, tech-innovator of a bygone era, stutter in its attempts to appeal to a younger generation of smartphone and tablet users. As corporate IT policies evolved over the last few years and became increasingly tolerant of employees bringing their own devices to work, the consumerization of business technology took a significant toll on RIM’s bottom line. IT administrators have always loved BlackBerry for its secure OS and easy manageability in large-scale environments, but according to recent studies, only 7 percent of IT admins plan on increasing their use of RIM products in the future. And so the BlackBerry brand is left with a seeming paradox on its hands: Be cool to survive in the business world that made the company a success by being reliably boring. Explaining the tidal shift in consumer tastes, a source close to RIM told BGR last year “They’re selling a screen with a giant calculator attached to it. It’s not a cool device anymore.”
Youth appeal

To this end, BlackBerry has become increasingly adventurous with its advertising lately. The inescapable “Be Bold” campaign drafted popular bloggers to opine on their boldest moments. In a much-covered misstep, RIM anthropomorphized a social networking survey it conducted over Twitter into a cartoon super-hero team that featured “Gogo Girl: The Achiever” and “Justin Steele: The Advocate.” The ad was widely derided by users, prompting one participant to comment that she would “now carry my BB in a brown paper sack in order to avoid public mockery,” according to The New York Times. RIM even went so far as to issue a mea culpa over the ad, saying the super heroes were “not a new ad campaign,” and would only be making a “one-time appearance,” according to The Times article.

Although former RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis is widely regarded as a keen visionary who recognized a void in business communication and filled it with the BlackBerry, he was also seen by RIM insiders as a boss stuck in his ways. As BGR quoted a source inside RIM’s Waterloo headquarters at the dawn of the iPhone launch, “Mike is convinced people won’t buy an iPhone because it doesn’t have a battery as good as a BlackBerry.” Although Lazaridis is no longer running the company, his replacement, Thorsten Heins, may not be moving far enough from Lazaridis’s outmoded view of the smartphone industry. Although it’s still unclear what BlackBerry will be doing with its College Humor spokespeople, the move looks to be much of the same.

iPhone 5 rumor rollup for the week ending March 9

March 10, 2012, 7:58 AM — The new iPad's great contribution to the iOSsphere is how it's already fueling new rumors about the iPhone 5.

This week, existential angst about The Name, new iPad's revelations about the new iPhone, being unclear on Clearwire, and a formula for creating your own conclusion about The Date for iPhone 5.

You read it here second.

__________

"iPhone 5 May Now Be Able to Operate on Clearwire"

~ Delaon, PlaneteInsane, summarizing how a phone that hasn't been released may run on a network that hasn't been built

__________

iPhone 5 will have LTE/4G because the new iPad has it

"If the new iPad can make use of AT&T and Verizon's growing next-generation cellular networks, it's a fair bet the next iPhone will include that technology as well," writes Phil Hornshaw at Appolicious, summing up the Conventional Wisdom.

If one product has some New Thing, it's clear that a subsequent, completely different product will also have the New Thing. As Hornshaw says, "a transition to 4G for one Apple device pretty well signals that the company is on board with its capabilities, even as carriers continue to work on building their networks."

Because otherwise, it would be rather strange.

"It would seem rather strange that Apple would add 4G LTE technology to the iPad without bringing it to the iPhone as well," Hornshaw writes.

The LTE iPhone 5 "will be a significant step forward for Apple users, and a big boost in cellular data speeds when doing all kinds of mobile tasks and actions," he adds. Those would be mobile tasks and actions like sending a tweet, or updating your Facebook status, or checking the American Idol website. More bandwidth definitely means gaming, and web surfing and a "host of other things will be significantly improved," he gushes.

How have we managed without LTE all these years in the 3G wilderness?

There are a range of issues in bringing LTE to the iPhone, given Apple's emphasis on user experience and battery life. LTE networks in the U.S. are still pretty much in their infancy, with the number of subscribers only a fraction of 3G users. Apple recognized this in the new iPad, which perhaps more importantly than LTE support, also included support for still-faster 3G links, which is what most people will be using for the next several years.

The big question is whether Apple can get LTE/3G silicon that will be small enough and power-efficient enough to make it viable in 2012 for the next iPhone as compared to the just-announced new tablet.

iPhone 5 will not have the new A5X chip because the iPad already has it

This is actually a real news story, by Agam Shaw, of our sister group, IDG News Service. Shaw dug up some speculative analysis by a couple of industry boffins. Their consensus: Apple developed the new A5X CPU specifically for the new iPad, not as a general component that can also be included in the iPhone 5.

The analysts noted that they're still sorting through the not-very-many details known about the new CPU.

"The chips used in the first two iPads, the A4 and A5, both made their way into a new iPhone soon after," Shaw writes. "But the A5X, with its heavy focus on graphics, may not be ideal for smartphone use, and Apple may wait for a more power-efficient chip built with a new manufacturing process."

"I think that this new chip is probably just for the iPad," says Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst of The Linley Group. "It looks like they planned ahead for this."

Apple's earlier A4 and A5 chips, and the new A5X are all based on an ARM processor core, typically the Cortex-A9, which is widely used in many other phones. "Many current ARM-based chips are manufactured with a 40-nanometer process, but a shift to 28 nanometers is expected later this year," with the release of silicon based on the faster, more power-efficient Cortext-A15.

For the next iPhone, Apple may focus more on battery life than graphics, Gwennap suggests. "In that case, it may wait for a chip manufactured on a 28-nanometer manufacturing process, which should make the chip more power-efficient and cheaper to produce," he said.

iPhone 5 will run on Clearwire's LTE network...when it gets built
