Unlocked Nokia 808 PureView may launch in US,
Jealous of your European friends who’ll have a chance to play with the Nokia 808 PureView? The 41-megapixel camera looks intriguing, but Nokia crushed some dreams when it announced that the phone wouldn’t be coming to the United States. In an interview with PCMag, Nokia’s US President, Chris Weber, said that while carriers won’t be offering the phone, an unlocked phone launch isn’t off the table.
When asked about the phone directly by PCMag, Weber said the following: “We’ll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months.” The handset would be sold unlocked and unsubsidized, and feature support for AT&T’s 3G bands. No word on if the device will also work on T-Mobile’s AWS bands.
The phone might be coming to the United States after all, but we imagine only the most die hard Nokia fans would be willing to drop a large sum of cash on an unlocked handset (~$711 in Europe), even with the 41-megapixel sensor. The PureView still hasn’t been released in Europe either, with a launch expected later this month. India and Russia will be among the first countries to be see the phone launch.
If you don’t like the idea of picking up a Symbian handset purely for the camera tech on offer, then a Windows Phone handset with the technology may be coming in the future. Nokia has hinted that they’re planning on launching a Windows Phone with the PureView tech, and a recent job listing seeking an imaging expert backs that up.

Deutsche Telekom Profit Tops Estimates on T-Mobile USA,
Europe’s second- largest telephone company, reported earnings that beat analysts’ estimates as a decline in European revenue slowed and the T- Mobile USA unit boosted profitability.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization excluding some items slipped 0.1 percent to 4.48 billion euros ($5.8 billion) in the first quarter, the Bonn- based company said today. The profit compares with the 4.4 billion-euro average estimate of 21 analysts compiled by Bloomberg. Revenue dropped by a smaller-than-projected 1.1 percent to 14.4 billion euros.
T-Mobile USA, the unit that’s trying to hold onto its subscribers after a botched sale to AT&T Inc. (T) last year, increased profit as prepaid clients helped offset the loss of 510,000 contract customers in the quarter. Deutsche Telekom is discussing a merger of the division with MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) as it reviews options for the business, people familiar with the matter said.
“The stabilization in the adjusted Ebitda is astounding,” said Wolfgang Specht, an analyst at WestLB AG in Dusseldorf, Germany. “It’s something special when a European operator doesn’t report a decline.”
Cable Rivalry
Deutsche Telekom climbed 3 percent to 8.80 euros in Frankfurt trading, the steepest increase since Jan. 2. It is still down about 21 percent in the past 12 months, compared with a 13 percent decline by the 19-company Bloomberg Europe Telecommunication Services Index.
The operator confirmed its full-year forecasts. As the European debt crisis reduces demand for phone services and cable operators such as Kabel Deutschland Holding AG (KD8) win over fixed- line clients, Chief Executive Officer Rene Obermann is focusing on improving profitability in Germany and seeking revenue from new businesses such as mobile-health services and smart grids.
Deutsche Telekom reported higher revenue for some European countries before currency swings and regulatory effects, including Hungary and Poland, where it also added mobile customers. The revenue decline across the region slowed to 2.6 percent from 3.6 percent in the previous quarter. In the U.S., adjusted Ebitda rose 8 percent to $1.29 billion, while the margin advanced 2.5 percentage points to 25.6 percent.
Telecom Italia, BT
“This was a very satisfying quarter for us,” Obermann said in a statement. “We have made significant progress in many areas.”
Telefonica SA (TEF), France Telecom SA (FTE) and Telecom Italia SpA (TIT), have for the past years been counting on markets such as Latin America and Africa to drive revenue growth. Telecom Italia yesterday reported profit and sales that topped estimates, boosted by growth in Brazil and Argentina.
BT Group Plc (BT/A), the largest U.K. fixed-line operator, today increased its dividend forecast after fourth-quarter operating profit exceeded estimates.
Madrid-based Telefonica, Europe’s biggest phone company, is scheduled to report earnings tomorrow.
Telefonica added 2.9 percent in Madrid, Telecom Italia slipped 0.5 percent in Milan. BT lost 2.6 percent on the London exchange.
Deutsche Telekom, Germany’s former phone monopoly, forecast in February that adjusted Ebitda will drop this year to about 18 billion euros from 18.7 billion euros, while free cash flow, an indicator of future dividend payments, will dip to about 6 billion euros from 6.4 billion euros.
Dividend Pledge
Still, the company maintained its pledge to pay shareholders 70 cents a share for last year, even as Telefonica and France Telecom have announced plans to trim their payouts.
The first-quarter net income was 238 million euros, after 480 million euros last year, Deutsche Telekom said. The result was lowered by about 300 million euros in special effects, including charges related to early retirement plans. It also included depreciation on T-Mobile USA assets, which was suspended last year because of the pending disposal of the unit.
The German company’s efforts to keep costs down suffered a setback as it yielded in the past two weeks to demands for pay increases of 6.5 percent for almost 70,000 employees in the country. Wage talks for workers at the T-Systems corporate- client division will continue.

BlackBerry phones of Haqqani, Ijaz to be tested,
Islamabad, May 10 — The BlackBerry handsets of former Pakistani envoy to US, Husain Haqqani and Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz, the main characters involved in the memo scandal, will undergo forensic tests in London.
Forensic experts have reached the Pakistan High Commission in London to examine the handsets, Geo News reported.
Haqqani was forced to resign last year after Ijaz claimed he had asked him to pass on a memo from President Asif Ali Zardari to then chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, seeking help from the US government in case of a military coup in Pakistan following the killing of Osama bin Laden.
Haqqani was recalled from Washington and faced a Supreme Court enquiry.
Ijaz was scheduled to appear before the forensic experts but Haqqani has expressed his lack of confidence in the experts and refused to appear before them, the report said.
The judicial commission probing the scandal had issued notices to both parties to either appear in person or instruct their representatives to appear before the forensic experts at the High Commission.
In February, Ijaz handed over to the commission four pages of his Blackberry bill detailing his communications with Haqqani.
Haqqani's counsel Zahid Bukhari, however, said the pages did not carry names and numbers and were illegible.
Ijaz also said he had written the controversial memo after receiving points from Haqqani and then delivered it to US National Security Advisor James Jones.
He said Haqqani had "directives" from Zardari on delivering the memo to Washington.
"It was my understanding that Haqqani had directives from the Pakistani president," Ijaz said while recording his testimony at the High Commision.
"Haqqani said (in the memo) that the civilian government needs to be strengthened against the 'bad boys'", Ijaz said.
The term "bad boys" referred to army chief (General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani) or ISI chief (Lt. Gen. Ahmad Shuja Pasha), he said.
Say what you will about Gameloft, the developer occasionally does a good job of filling the App Store void with iOS versions of console staples. N.O.V.A. 3 [ $6.99 ], the third game in the company’s perennial FPS series is one such title. Capitalizing on the success of the previous two titles, as well as offering full support for the latest and greatest in Apple hardware, N.O.V.A. 3 offers a great action-packed single player experience complete with some very impressive visuals.
Following the never-ending trials and tribulations of Kal Warden, N.O.V.A. 3 continues the story as Warden is yet again recalled into action, this time to the ruins of San Francisco to aid an old friend. From there, you’ll travel to several more planets, a derelict ship, and even the home planet of the Volterites. I’ll save the spoilers for those of you that care about the story, but suffice to Kal gets tasked with saving the human race (again) from certain doom and will go through humans, Volterites and Judgers alike to accomplish that feat.
You’ll be saving humanity via gameplay that should be largely familiar for genre veterans. Like its predecessor, N.O.V.A. 3 has you exploring a wide variety of locales while battling enemy archetypes and hitting objective-marker based goals that shouldn’t offer much in terms of surprise. Also, you can expect the occasional break from the on-foot battle heroics by piloting Mechs, manning the weaponry on top of AI driven trucks and serving as sniper support for other NPCs. By now, it should be apparent that Gameloft has uncovered the formula for a successful FPS, and while N.O.V.A. 3 doesn’t offer much in terms of revolutionary gameplay, it certainly succeeds in what it does implement.
One interesting inclusion is an in-game store that offers unique weapons and upgrades that takes currency you earn by completing single player levels. It’s nice to see a system that actually provides rewards proportionally to how well you complete a level run. Unfortunately, the inclusion of IAP to bypass said currency collection lessens experience somewhat.
A well-done FPS is in some ways far more reliant on its controls than other genres. Thankfully, N.O.V.A. 3 works within its limitations to provide a competent scheme for a touch screen. The standard dual-stick controls are available, as well as generous use of a swipe gestures for swapping weapons and powers. I was particularly a fan of the gyroscope inclusion, as proper use of that option goes a long way towards making the game’s aiming accurate and fun.
N.O.V.A. 3 plays well on the iPhone, but I found the screen to be a bit cramped compared to the roomy iPad controls. Either way, a host of options such as auto-aim, attempt to help even touch-screen novices blast away with ease. While I imagine there are some folks that will never get used to touchscreen controls for an FPS, the fact remains that N.O.V.A. 3’s control schemes do a decent job of letting you take out baddies and navigate the environments with ease.
By the way, those environments you’ll be traversing across look absolutely gorgeous. N.O.V.A. 3 takes full advantage of the hardware offerings of the iPhone 4S and new iPad, which leads to one of the most visually impressive FPS titles I’ve played on iOS. The textures, weather and visual effects – even the shadows are all well done and simply stunning.
As nice as the game looks on the small scree, N.O.V.A. 3 begs to be played on a new iPad. The larger retina-display of the tablet lets you truly appreciate just how far the visuals have come in the series. The fact that the game manages to look this good while successfully running (for the most part) at a decent framerate is probably the most impressive accomplishment. Granted, there were a few mishaps with the graphics engine, such as a few instances of falling through environments, the occasional slowdown when there’s a lot of action on the screen and the unusually lengthy loading screens (that occasionally make you think the game crashed), but these do little to detract from what is an otherwise impressive visual system.
It would be easy to simply classify N.O.V.A. 3 as impressive eye candy and leave it at that, but Gameloft deserves credit for continuing the trend of creating a well-rounded FPS experience complete with a full story-driven campaign, a plethora of control and gameplay options and a balanced gameplay experience. We sometimes talk about games that possess that certain something that make them ideal for showcasing the might of iOS. I’d argue that, while N.O.V.A. 3 may not necessarily be at the top of that shortlist, it has enough going for it to warrant being close to such a classification.
