Motorola's Motoactv MP3 player now available in Singapore
,

Launched late last year, Motorola's Motoactv MP3 player and sports tracker will finally be out in stores in Singapore. The device retails at S$399 (US$320.58) locally, and will be sold at Newstead outlets here.

Meant as a "smart" MP3 player, this nifty little device looks a lot like a boxier iPod nano. The Motoactv has a 1.6-inch touchscreen protected by Gorilla Glass as well as an auto-dimming function for easy readability in different lighting conditions.

Inside, there's 8GB of memory as well as the latest Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity to pair with wireless headphones and heart rate monitors. The GPS module lets the device track a variety of performance matrices, including pace, distance and the estimated number of calories burned. The MP3 player helps motivate you, too, by learning which songs you get pumped-up by, playing those when you need a boost. After the calorie burning, the device syncs with your Wi-Fi network to upload your personal stats to an online portal.

While smartphones equipped with apps such as Endomondo and RunKeeper already do most of what the Motoactv is capable of, this could find a following with folks that prefer to leave their handsets at home--to avoid getting a call from the office just when they're about to beat a personal best.

LUNENBURG, Mass., May 04, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's largest 4G LTE wireless network, recently activated new 4G LTE coverage in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. This private investment further expands 4G LTE coverage in the vicinity of Route 13 between Lunenburg and Townsend.

Within Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE service area, Verizon customers with 4G LTE-enabled devices can post status updates and photos, surf the Web, share music, and download files at speeds up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G networks.

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE customers in the coverage area should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $3 billion into its New England network since 2000, including more than $297 million in 2011 alone, to increase coverage and capacity on behalf of customers.

"We've always believed that the best wireless devices deserve the best wireless networks," said executive director for Network for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. "People across Massachusetts are increasingly relying on tablets, smartphones and apps to stay organized, connected and entertained. Our investment in Worcester County - and across New England - has kept us ahead of these consumer trends and underscores our belief that 4G LTE delivers the best value to customers by maximizing the performance of their wireless devices."

As of April 19, Verizon's 4G LTE network covers more than two-thirds of the U.S. population - allowing consumers in 230 markets to take advantage of blazingly fast speeds with a wide variety of 4G LTE devices, including the DROID 4 and the DROID RAZR(TM) MAXX(TM) by Motorola. By the end of 2012, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will be in more than 400 markets, and available to more than 260 million people in the United States.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, the devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless' 3G network is the largest, most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their areas.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named "Fastest 4G Network Yet" by Popular Science's 2011 Best of What's New Awards, and was ranked No. 1 on PC World's 100 Best Products of 2011. Shares of BlackBerry maker hit eight-year low

Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. hit an eight-year low Thursday and have fallen more than 15 percent in the past three days, after the company unveiled a prototype BlackBerry with new software.

THE SPARK: The prototype has caused angst for BlackBerry users and RIM investors. When new chief executive Thorsten Heins unveiled a touchscreen prototype Tuesday at RIM's annual BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Fla., he gave no new timetable on when the much-delayed devices will be released.

Then on Wednesday, he had to reassure anxious BlackBerry users that RIM will keep making models that include a physical keyboard. He stressed that the device and new software is not the final product.

Heins also didn't announce any licensing partnerships. Some investors want RIM to generate more revenue by licensing products, like its popular BBM messenger service, to other carriers.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said Wednesday night that Heins said he would wait to see what kind of demand there was for BlackBerry 10 before pursuing possible licensing deals.

THE BIG PICTURE: The once iconic company is caught in a tough spot. It needs to get out its new software platform, the BlackBerry 10, while continuing to sell current models.

But sales have slumped, and are likely to be pressured further as shoppers wait for the newest software to go on sale. RIM has had difficulty competing in the United States with flashier, consumer-oriented touchscreen phones such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone and models that run Google Inc.'s Android software.

Analysts say RIM's future depends on BlackBerry 10, although many say it may come too late. RIM has been undergoing a comprehensive strategic review for the last three months.

The ANALYSIS: Misek said that the fact that RIM released a prototype now means the new BlackBerrys won't be out until the end of the year.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said it could be a year before there are any signs that RIM's new BlackBerry 10 software is winning customers.

Gillis also faulted the company on its communications strategy, saying that RIM could have prevented BlackBerry subscribers from worrying if there would be a physical keyboard on some of the new BlackBerry models.

SHARE ACTION: RIM shares fell 70 cents, or 5.4 percent, to $12.10 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. The shares have lost almost three-quarters of their value over the past 12 months, and bottomed at $11.92 on Thursday, their lowest point since January 2004.

iPhone 4S trimmed by $74 at Wal-Mart stores

The cost of the 16GB iPhone has been lowered by Wal-Mart to $114 from $188, but the price drop is only available at certain stores so far.

Apple's iPhone 4S is getting a price break at certain Wal-Mart stores.

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers: You may be able to grab the 16GB iPhone 4S for just $114 at your local store.

Apple's flagship phone can now be had for that price with a two-year contract but apparently only through AT&T. Still, that's a healthy discount from Wal-Mart's regular price of $188.

The price of the 8GB iPhone 4 has also been chopped by the retail giant. The older model is now selling for just $34 under contract, compared with $88 previously.

But prospective iPhone buyers may be challenged trying to hunt down a store with the lower-priced models.

One store in Edmond, Oklahoma, was found offering the cheaper price by Cult of Mac. Another store in Austin, Texas, had also marked down the price of the iPhone, as discovered by The Verge. But other stores seem to be sticking with the higher price.

I called several East Coast Wal-Mart outlets this morning. None of them were offering the lower price, while several said they don't even carry the iPhone.

Wal-Mart's Web site still lists the price of the iPhone as $188 but noted that "store pricing may vary" and that the iPhone is available only at select stores.
