LG Rumor Reflex (Boost Mobile)


The good: The LG Rumor Reflex has good call quality, a responsive touch screen, a slide-out keyboard for swift texting, and a user-friendly interface.

The bad: The Rumor Reflex's speaker quality is poor, the data connection was slow, and the camera interface is also poorly designed.

The bottom line: As a feature phone, the Rumor Reflex can do the basics well and its QWERTY keyboard and touch-screen display make it easy to use.

Psst...have you heard the news? The LG Rumor is back, and this time it's called the Rumor Reflex. With a slightly bumped up camera, sleeker design, new touch screen, and a more expansive keyboard, the Reflex is a welcomed face-lift. Although it doesn't come with all the high-tech specs of a smartphone, it's a handset that can do the basics reliably and with no fuss.

The device is available on Sprint's 3G network for $29.99 after you sign a two-year contract and send in a mail-in $50 rebate. If you don't want to commit yourself at all, this device is also available on Boost Mobile's network for $79.99.

Design
The LG Rumor Reflex measures 4.2 inches tall, 2.1 inches wide, and is 0.6 inch thick. It weighs 4.7 ounces, which is light for a phone that has a physical keyboard. Though that keyboard also makes it thick, the Rumor Reflex has a petite build and it fits compactly in my hand. Also, it easily slipped into my clutch, and into my jeans pocket.

Front and center is a 3-inch WQVGA capacitive touch screen. Its resolution is only 400x240 pixels and it can display only 262,000 colors, so it's not the crispest or most vibrant display out there. Videos and games are pixelated and images, like its set of default wallpaper, are grainy. On the upside, though, the simple menu icons and text are legible. Yet, what I liked most about the display was that it was responsive. I could scroll through menu items, type on the virtual keyboard (if I didn't want to use the physical keyboard), and click on links with ease.

The QWERTY keyboard behind the display lights up with a soft blue glow and has four rows of keys, including directional keys, a function and shift key, a backspace, and a symbol key that gives you access to 16 cute icons and smiley faces. However, unless you're sending texts to another Rumor Reflex, don't expect other devices to be able to see these colorful emoticons. Although I like that the keys are raised and are easy to push, they're too small. I have petite hands already, so I can't imagine anyone with even slightly larger mitts trying to type. The slider mechanism is sturdy, and easily snaps back and forth.

On the left side of the handset are a volume rocker and a Micro-USB port that's protected by a plastic cover. Up top are a power/sleep button and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The power button is completely flushed with the rest of the body, so it's hard to use it by feel. The right side includes a shortcut button that also opens the camera when the display is unlocked.

With its gray plastic build and fishnet stocking texturing, the back of the phone feels cheap. Near the top left corner is the lens for the 2-megapixel camera, with a small reflective square to the right of it for vanity shots. Next to that are two small slits for the output speaker. By a small indentation at the bottom, you can pry the backing of the device off and gain access to the 1,000mAh battery inside and the microSD slot, which can accept cards up to 32GB.

The LG Rumor Reflex's netted, textured backing looks a bit cheap.

Above the display is an in-ear audio speaker and below are three buttons (back, home, and call) that light up when in use. The home button has an odd streaky plastic build, which makes the device feel even cheaper, but I like that they're raised and easy to press.

Features
The LG Rumor Reflex is powered by a single-core 480MHz processor and has 512MB of internal storage. For basic tasks like navigating around the phone, texting, and viewing photos, the processor holds up. When I used the device, it didn't feel laggy even when I was jumping between tasks. That said, the shutter speed of the camera is slow.

The handset can hold up to 600 contacts, and includes a simple Web browser, Sprint Navigation, and a media hub for purchasing and storing music, ringtones shows, movies, and games. You can buy additional items like wallpaper and other applications through its shopping portal. Lastly, there's a social networking icon where Facebook and Twitter apps are preloaded.

In the tools folder, you can access several features, including a clock, a calendar, Bluetooth 3.0, voice command and voice memo, a calculator, a notepad, and a document reader, which lets you read files stored on your memory card.

The 2-megapixel camera includes a zoom and a brightness meter; four color modes (normal, black-and-white, negative, and sepia); six white balance options (auto, tungsten, fluorescent, sunny, cloudy, and manual); eight fun frames or graphics you can superimpose on your photo, an option to take pictures at night, and three timer options (off, five, and 10 seconds). You can also set the resolution of the photo (2MP, high, med, and low); its quality (fine, normal, economy); and its shutter sound.

When switching to camcorder mode, you're prompted to choose between shooting a long video or video mail, the latter giving you a maximum recording time of 30 seconds. Recording options include the same zoom, brightness, and white balance meters; and the same color and timer options. There are additional settings as well, such as choosing between three resolutions (WQVGA, medium, and low); quality options (fine, normal, economy); and three cue sounds.

Is the HTC One S T-Mobile's savior?

T-Mobile USA is struggling to hold on to customers as subscribers ditch it for carriers with the iPhone and other cool Android handsets. But the HTC One S may finally offer something worth staying for.

 
T-Mobile USA may not have the iPhone or a slew of other cool Android phones, but next week it will start selling the HTC One S, one of HTC's premiere smartphones that may finally give its subscribers a phone that excites them.

The new HTC One S will go on sale in T-Mobile stores and online April 25 for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The smartphone, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, is the first on T-Mobile's network to sport the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software. It also supports the latest version of HTC's homegrown Sense 4.0 software.

With a 4.3 AMOLED screen, the device is smaller than the HTC One X that will soon appear on AT&T's network, but it offers many of the same features, such as an 8-megapixel camera with rapid shutter speed that allows users to take several pictures by pressing and holding a finger on the picture icon. It also supports Beats audio, which enhances the sound quality for music as well as video that's played on the device.

And even though T-Mobile doesn't offer 4G LTE service, it does offer enhanced 3G service called HSPA+, which delivers 4G-like speeds. The latest version of technology T-Mobile is using can theoretically offer download speeds up to 42 Mbps. And the new HTC One S will operate on that network where it's available.

CNET Reviews editor Brian Bennett was so wowed by the device, he called it the "best phone you can get on T-Mobile (for now), wrapping Android 4.0, 4G data speeds, and a beautiful 4.3-inch AMOLED screen into one svelte package."

There's no question that T-Mobile has been in sore need of cool new phones on its network. While AT&T and Verizon Wireless announced devices like the Motorola Razr Maxx, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and Nokia Lumia 900, T-Mobile subscribers have been left in the cold.

The No. 4 U.S. carrier is also the only major wireless operator in the U.S. to not offer the iPhone. And executives at the company recently acknowledged that not having the iPhone has hurt its sales and caused many customers to flee. In the fourth quarter of 2011, T-Mobile lost 526,000 customers. This compares to a gain of 126,000 customers during the third quarter. Executives blamed the subscriber loss to the fact that it didn't have the iPhone.

While consumers can use unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile's network, they don't get the best experience since the iPhone's 3G service is optimized for a different band of wireless spectrum. So even though people can pop in a T-Mobile SIM card, and the phone will work on T-Mobile's network, it will only operate at 2G speeds.

T-Mobile says it would happily add the iPhone to its device lineup, but executives say the decision is up to Apple. And so far Apple hasn't said why it isn't giving T-Mobile the chance. It also hasn't said whether T-Mobile will get a chance to offer the next new iPhone that will be released later this year.

Even without the iPhone, T-Mobile is finally beefing up its offering with cool alternatives that may satisfy those looking for a high-end smartphone experience, similar to what the iPhone offers.

"We're not trying to compare the One S with the iPhone," said Matt Bybee, product manager for handset marketing at T-Mobile. "But everyone who I've let use this device hasn't wanted to give it back to me. It's a great phone, and I think it will appeal to a lot of different people."

The HTC One S isn't the only cool new phone that will soon be coming to T-Mobile's network. Samsung is also rumored to preparing a version of its Galaxy S III for T-Mobile. The new device, which is expected to be announced at an event in London on May 3, is one of the most anticipated smartphone announcements of the spring. That phone along with the HTC One S could finally offer some T-Mobile subscribers a reason to stay.

How RIM can Save the BlackBerry Brand in Three Easy Steps

 
BlackBerry is an iconic brand. Unfortunately on its current trajectory BlackBerry is going to be an extinct brand in the not too distant future. RIM has a solid foundation, and it can still be salvaged, but RIM needs to stop throwing stuff at the wall just to see what sticks.

A Wall Street Journal report states that RIM is considering “all opportunities” to turn things around and steady its plummeting market share. Instead of pursuing every possibility simultaneously, RIM should scale back and follow this simple three step process to get things back on track:

1. Focus

Earlier this year a RIM executive admitted that he wasn’t even sure how many different models of the BlackBerry smartphone RIM is currently producing. It’s pretty bad when you don’t even know how many devices your own company makes.

I checked the RIM site. I don’t know how many BlackBerry smartphones there are globally, but there are 22 different models listed for the United States alone. That’s too many. It’s a waste of resources for RIM, it’s too many variations for wireless providers and developers to keep straight, and it’s confusing for individuals trying to choose a smartphone.

Pick three. Offer a cutting edge flagship BlackBerry smartphone, a middle of the road model that has all of the core features people expect from a BlackBerry smartphone, and an economy model for people on very tight budgets.

While you’re at it—forget about distractions like licensing out the BlackBerry OS or switching over to developing Android smartphones. Nobody wants to license a dying mobile platform if RIM itself can’t figure out how to market it, and RIM needs to stick with the brand that brought it to the dance.
2. Nix the Tablet

RIM tried. I’d say it tried valiantly, but I don’t actually believe that. The reality is that the PlayBook tablet is a dud. RIM recently revealed that it had sold just over a million of the tablet since its launch over a year ago. Meanwhile Apple sold over 15 million iPads last quarter, and three million new iPads the first weekend it was launched.

It’s not just RIM. HP is no slouch in the world of technology and it pulled the plug on its TouchPad tablet.

RIM may very well be able to compete in the tablet market some day. But, for now refer to step one—Focus. RIM needs to conserve and streamline its resources if it wants to survive to fight another day. The tablet is a distraction.

Byword for iPhone and iPad

 
 Macworld - I recently reviewed the Mac OS X version of Byword, and developer Metaclassy has since released an iOS counterpart. With the same basic concept-providing a simple, minimal text and Markdown editor-the iOS version of Byword offers some unique features.

The iOS and Mac OS X versions work together via iCloud document syncing, and the iOS iteration of Byword also supports Dropbox. So even if you don't use Byword on your Mac, you can access documents with the iOS app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Byword for iOS cannot replicate the quick formatting "popover" that the desktop application has, using an interesting approach on iOS: The developer calls this "a swipeable row above the keyboard." This three-section row of buttons lets you quickly apply Markdown formatting and paired characters (such as pairs of quotes or brackets), and it even has arrow keys, something the iOS keyboard desperately needs, so you can navigate in your text documents. (On the iPhone, there's also an undo key in this bar.) One section of this row displays word and character counts; you tap to change from words to characters to words/characters; it would make more sense to just display both, rather than having to tap to change.

The app offers a number of ways to export text. You can export to HTML, converting Markdown formatting to the appropriate HTML. You can export via e-mail, sending your text as rich text, plain text or as an attachment. And you can copy the HTML converted from your Markdown formatting to paste into, say, a blog posting interface. You can also print if you have a printer that supports AirPrint.

Byword for iOS is limited in the fonts available, offering only four choices. In addition, you can't change the font size at all; this is a big limitation for me, as none of the fonts suit me, and I would like to be able to choose a different size. Many iOS text editors offer these choices, and Byword's approach seems a bit limiting.

It's important to note that Byword for iOS cannot open RTF files you create with the desktop version of the program, so if you do use Byword on Mac OS X and create RTF files, you'll need to either convert them to plain text or choose another iOS text editor.

Byword for iOS offers some very useful features, notably the quick formatting options and arrow keys on its "swipeable row." Its font limitations may be problematic to some, but the ability to sync with both iCloud and Dropbox makes it a versatile iOS text editor for anyone who works with text or Markdown files.
