Nokia Anticipates Weaker Profits
Nokia Corp.(NOK) recently slashed its profit outlook for the forthcoming quarters citing stiff competition, market share losses stemming from the lack of innovative products in its portfolio.

Earlier, Nokia teamed up with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to launch their first Windows-based smartphones. But the move was not at all accretive for the company as it sold 12 million smartphones in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 versus 19.6 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011. Moreover, the company sold a mere 2 million Lumia series of handsets in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 while Apple, Inc. (AAPL) sold a million iPhone 4S devices within first six days of its release.

According to a data released by IDC, Nokia continued to hold the top spot at the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, with 26.6% market share versus 30.7% market share by the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 followed by Samsung Electronics and Apple.

During the ongoing quarter, Nokia sold 71 million mobile devices versus 108.5 million devices in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. The steep decline in mobile device sales is mainly attributable to poor performance of the company’s handset business in the emerging nations of India, China, and Middle East and Africa.

Developing nations have for long been Nokia’s stronghold. However, with the advent of cheaper Android-based mobile phones in those price-sensitive regions, Nokia is again losing market share.

In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, Nokia reported a 9% decline in Average Selling Price (ASP) for smartphones to €140 while ASPs for traditional mobile phones declined 24% to €32 in the same period. Therefore, with both volumes and prices taking a hit, the company’s margins are likely to remain under pressure. The $100 compensation promised to the new users of Lumia 900 in U.S. that encountered software problems will make matters worse.

During the first quarter of 2012, Nokia expects the operating margin to be a negative 3%, much lower than the previously mentioned guidance of breakeven operating margin for its non-IFRS Devices & Services.

Likewise, Nokia expects its second quarter 2012 operating margin for its non-IFRS Devices & Services to be flat or below the first quarter operating margin.

Currently, Nokia has a Zacks#5 Rank, implying a short-term Strong Sell rating on the stock.

Dear Rogers Wireless shit heads

Do you want to know why people hate you Rogers? Try calling to order a data plan for your iPad or even calling tech support. That will make you so frustrated, you’ll know why most of the country hates you.

I called last Monday to put a data plan on my iPad — five days later, I’m still sitting here with no data plan. Here’s what happened:

- Call Rogers, they say I need a new 4G SIM card and then call them back. No problem, I go to the store and get one.

- Install SIM and call Rogers.

- They go through setting up an account, but couldn’t activate the Flex Plan.

- Rogers says the SIM card must have been activated already and I need a new one. But it’s new, how can that be?

- Back to the store with the iPad and ask them to set up the account.

- They set it up, but couldn’t activate the Flex Plan.

- Go home, wait for a few hours, get frustrated and call Rogers.

- I want to activate the Flex Plan. Rogers says the Flex Plan is only for telemarketing and asks where I got it.

- It’s listed on your Web site under iPad plans.

- Oh.

- No problem setting up a Flex Plan, says Rogers.

- Need to setup yet another account.

- Wait on hold for 30 minutes.

- Girl says she can’t activate the Flex Plan.

- She’s elevating the problem and will have an answer by Thursday.

- Wait for four days.

- Rogers calls on Thursday. I answer and they hang up on me.

- Friday morning comes, I’m pissed off and writing this.

After hours of driving, visiting stores and on the phone, I still don’t have a Rogers plan on my iPad.

Morons.

iPhone 5 Release Date for 2012 Ramps Up with New Rumors

 
So the speculation on when the iPhone release date is ramping up right on cue, with some speculating a release date in June, others saying that the iPhone release date will be in October like last year. Whatever iPhone rumors and news we hear in the coming months will surely include iPhone 5 features and specs, and the current favorites are 4G LTE, an iOS6 update, and the enhancement of Siri and iTunes with iCloud.
iPhone 5 Release Date

There are two camps right now: those who say that Apple will return to a June iPhone 5 release date, and those who think that based on the move last year by Apple to do up an October iPhone 5 release date, this will be the norm from here on out. What do you think? The June camp cites the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) as one of the causes, although Apple seems to have moved away from conferences like the WWDC to do their own announcements. Both the iPhone 4s release date announcement and the iPad 3 release date announcement were the start of this. The iPhone release date rumors season is fully open at this point.

There was a story this week on Macotakara that spoke of the manufacturer Foxconn hiring staff for a June iPhone release, with a recruiter saying "We're looking for 18,000 employees…for the fifth-generation phone." AppleInsider smartly wonders how a low level employee can be so "in the know" about a company as secretive as Apple. Hiring and releasing do not always track together, so this really proves nothing. It's also worth noting that an iPhone release date in the Fall and an iPad release date in the Spring gives Apple 6 months cycles to comfortably focus on each item.

I love how everyone has "sources" inside of Apple that are so in the know when we all "know" that Apple has so much secrecy inside the company that most Apple employees don't have a clue to ANYTHING about the iPad or iPhone when it's in development. But somehow, all of these people outside of the tent are just so dialed in to the inner workings of Apple ...
iPhone 5 features

One of the big rumors of iPhone 5 features right now is the 4G LTE compatibility. The iPhone also usually brings an update to iOS, so this time we could be looking at an iOS upgrade to iOS 6. This is one to watch to see how the rumors and news reports happen in coming months. The iPhone price is largely undetermined with the current model starting at $199.
