Nokia Slashes Forecast on Smartphone Competition; Shares Slide
Nokia Oyj (NOK1V), a year into an alliance with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to try to win back market share lost to Apple Inc. (AAPL), cut its profit forecast for the handset division, sending the stock as much as 12 percent lower.
The first-quarter operating margin for the devices and services business was probably minus 3 percent based on the non- IFRS accounting standard, Espoo, Finland-based Nokia said in a statement today. The company had predicted “around breakeven” with a range of 2 percentage points in either direction. Second- quarter figures will be “similar to or below” those for the current quarter, it said.
“During the first quarter 2012, multiple factors negatively affected Nokia’s devices & services business to a greater extent than previously expected,” Nokia said, citing competition in smartphones, macro-economic environment and demand for its new products.
Nokia fell as much as 45.4 cents to 3.37 euros and traded at 3.40 euros, or 11 percent lower, as of 3:13 p.m. in Helsinki. The company has a market value of about 12.4 billion euros ($16.3 billion).

Bell Mobility's Android 4.0 update schedule: ICS on all Superphones and tablets by July
The long, torturous wait for Android 4.0 updates might nearly be over for subscribers on Canada's Bell Mobility, according to a leaked internal memo posted by MobileSyrup. Assuming the schedule is the real deal, Samsung's devices will be the first to be upgraded, with the flagship Galaxy S II and 5.3-inch Galaxy Note getting their updates this month, followed by HTC's Sensation and Raider devices in June, then lastly the LG Optimus LTE in July. Turning to tablets, Bell's Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 LTE updates both look to be on track for May and June, respectively. Unfortunately, news isn't so good for owners of non-Superphone Android devices like the Galaxy W 4G and LG Eclypse 4G — for now it looks like Bell's only rolling out updates for its top tier devices.

BlackBerry BBM integrated with Facebook, Twitter and more
The BlackBerry BBM service will be integrated with Twitter and Facebook, RIM has announced, allowing users of the encrypted IM system to quickly share tweets or Facebook status updates directly from the app. The new social networking integration is part of RIM’s enhancement of BBM connected apps set to roll out over the next two weeks, with new versions of BlackBerry Travel, BlackBerry App World and BBM Music all hooking into the service.
In the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v3.0 app and Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones v3.0, there’s a new “Share with BBM” button, while in BlackBerry Travel v2.5 it’s possible to share upcoming flights and other travel arrangements via IM. BBM Music, meanwhile, pulls in recommended contacts directly into the app, broadening the possible range of tracks from others you can listen to and comment on.
Finally, BlackBerry App World allows users to share their latest download via BBM. It also supports NFC – for phones with the BlackBerry Tag technology – to make sharing an app between devices more straightforward.
A new version of BlackBerry Messenger itself, v6.2, now gets animated avatars, along with BlackBerry Tag integration. It also promises faster voice notes transfer and a more straightforward way to update a profile message.
The updated Twitter app is available to download now. The other apps – Facebook, Travel, App World and BBM Music, along with BBM version 6.2 – will arrive over the coming ten days.

Sprint Could Offer 4G LTE iPhone 5 Says Sprint's CFO
It has been officially confirmed that Sprint would be able to offer 4G LTE iPhone 5, that is, if Apple releases one during the expected Fall timeframe. Sprint’s ability to operate Apple’s 4G LTE iPad 3 came into question when the Cupertino company only released a 4G LTE iPad on Verizon and AT&T. Currently, Sprint does not have a widespread 4G LTE network and is working to release the new technology in six cities by mid-year. The network may be limited to major areas such as Chicago and New York City, which are prime testing locations for major carriers.
In a report released Tuesday by NASDAQ, it was confirmed by Sprint Chief Financial Officer Joe Euteneuer that Sprint is indeed planning a 4G LTE network, although he did not specify whether Apple would be releasing a 4G LTE iPhone on the network, if at all this year. Currently, AT&T and Verizon have rolled out their 4G LTE networks to major parts of the United States, with reports also confirming that

According to the NASDAQ report, Sprint is currently in a contract with Apple for $15.5 billion worth of iPhones, which won’t make the carrier any profit until 2015. Initially, this is what worried many who wondered if Sprint would be getting not only the new iPad, but a possible 4G LTE iPhone down the road. With Sprint’s CFO confirming that 4G LTE is on the horizon, it is now clear that Sprint is able to and will pursue LTE technology, compete with both AT&T and Verizon, and offer an LTE iPhone down the road.
