How Nokia can help developers around the world
Nokia's wide distribution and local know-how can be good resources for a developer looking to get ahead overseas. Its unique technology set can mean better apps too.
For developers looking beyond iOS and Android, the timing may be right to jump on the Windows Phone bandwagon. Nokia has a lot to do with that.
The Lumia 900 launch signals the potential rise of the Windows Phone platform, with Nokia, Microsoft, and AT&T looking to make a big push for the phone. Nokia brought New York's Times Square to a standstill on Friday thanks to a quick concert performance by Nicki Minaj, with the area blanketed in Nokia blue and references to its new flagship phone.
AT&T is promising its biggest launch ever. The phone began selling yesterday. Microsoft, meanwhile, is paying developers up to $600,000 to create programs for its platform.
Beyond that, it may behoove developers to cozy up to Nokia in particular. Despite its diminished role in the smartphone world, it retains wide distribution capabilities and relationships and experiences in many local markets around the world.
"Nokia offers more distribution," said Marco Argenti, senior vice president of developer experience at Nokia. "We bring the customer base, and developers see the opportunity."
Apps have long been considered a weakness with the Windows Phone platform. The operating system recently surpassed 80,000 apps, although many of the most popular apps typically launch on iOS and Android first.
Microsoft holds several developer outreach events around the world, and plans to run 600 events around the world. Argenti said in many of them, Nokia takes the lead because of the company's experience in that region.
That experience also benefits the developer community. From country to country, Nokia actively curates the apps marketplace so they are relevant to local customers. That means a local developer or developer looking to fine-tune an app for a specific market has more of a shot of gaining an audience.
Nokia already does it in its own Nokia app store, but is also doing it for the Windows Phone platform too, Argenti said.
In addition, Nokia has a set of application programming interface tools that it offers for free, allowing developers to integrate capabilities from features like its Navteq navigation service. Next up: APIs that will work with its PureView camera technology. The PureView 808 phone with a 41-megapixel camera was shown off at Mobile World Congress in February, but a version would be coming to Windows Phone, Argenti said.
Argenti declined to provide additional details to a potential PureView Lumia phone, but said Nokia was working with developers on building apps using the powerful camera technology.
"The PureView-powered apps will blow your mind," Argenti said.
They may just be what the platform needs: some killer apps.
RIM is clinging to the government business as one of its last North American strongholds as consumers and businesses switch to rival devices with bigger touch screens and faster browsers. Sales in the U.S., still RIM’s biggest market, fell 57 percent last quarter, in part because Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones and devices running Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android software are proliferating in the workplace.
“Compared to the enterprise over the last year and a half or so, the federal business on whole is up,” said Totzke, who also runs RIM’s U.S. government sales business. “The employee base is shrinking, so if we’re looking at a market with fewer employees and our install base is stable to slightly up, that would seem to indicate that we have an increasing market share.”
Obama insisted on keeping his BlackBerry when he became president, and Totzke was in the U.S. capital touting the smartphone’s encryption and other security features to persuade more federal workers to adopt or stick with the device. To save money and administrative hassle, some agencies have started allowing employees to use their own iPhones and Android phones for work.
Reclaiming the Market
RIM Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins on March 29 acknowledged the BlackBerry maker was late to embrace the bring- your-own-device trend and vowed to “reclaim” market share lost to rivals.
RIM will make a “significant investment” in promotions in the Washington area in coming weeks to drum up awareness of what new BlackBerry 7 phones offer, including better Web browsing and touch-screen navigation, Totzke said.
“We need to help customers understand what is possible” with the devices, said Totzke, who joined Waterloo, Ontario- based RIM in 2001 and previously worked at Electronic Data Systems Corp., the company founded by billionaire Ross Perot.
RIM fell 0.7 percent to $12.67 in New York trading on April 5. The stock has lost 77 percent in the past year.
Mobile Fusion
In an acknowledgment of inroads made by rivals, RIM last week released BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, software that lets organizations manage iPhones and Android devices alongside BlackBerrys on their networks. RIM plans to make BlackBerry Mobile Fusion the “major player” in mobile-device management in coming years, according to Totzke, who said he’s in Washington on business two to three times a month.
That doesn’t mean RIM won’t focus on hardware, Totzke said.
RIM sold 400,000 devices to the U.S. federal government in the past year as it won more business and existing clients upgraded to the newer BlackBerry 7 devices introduced in August and added BlackBerry servers, he said.
About 40 percent of RIM’s government customers upgraded to new devices in the past 12 months, he said.

iPhone 5 Release Rumors: Will Next Apple Phone Feature Face
At a time when a lot of confusion surrounds the possible time frame for the release of Apple's next-gen iPhone, rumors and speculations related to the device's features are spreading like wildfire. Adding to the heat, new reports have said that Apple recently filed a couple of patent applications which might turn up as key features in future iDevices like iPhone and iPad.
According to a report in ITProPortal, the Cupertino tech giant had recently filed a patent titled "Electronic Device Operation Adjustment Based on Face Detection," which "details the way a device can act when it recognizes its user."
The new patent application by Apple describes an "electronic device having at least a front facing image capture device and a front facing display device arranged to display visual content." The device would capture a user's image, weigh it against the predetermined set of data stored and then unlock and load a user's profile, said the report.
The new face unlock feature would be more secure than and different from other similar applications because in cases when the user is not recognized, the device won't give alternative choices like asking for a security code in order to unlock.
As per the patent application, "the facial data can be used to determine an orientation of the human face relative to the orientation of the presented visual content. In other words, the electronic device can determine if the orientation of the presented visual content is substantially the same, or different, than the orientation of the human face."
Another ITProPortal report suggested that the next iPhone's camera could be equipped with "augmented reality features," allowing the camera "not only to capture images but also to interpret them and put information into context."
The new technology was revealed through a recent patent filing by Apple at the United States Patent Office. Apple has reportedly started working on the new technology, which "would allow cameras in the future iOS devices to read ISBN numbers, bar codes and other pricing systems, phone numbers and more."
Wait, there's more to it. According to the patent filing, the technology would even allow users to use their iPhone camera to scan a movie poster or a magazine and then access any URL found directly from the picture. In addition, the camera would also be able to identify actors' faces and then provide the appropriate menu options for the information.
As said by ITProPortal, with the help of the new pattern recognition technology, users would be able to scan a phone number and then they would immediately get the option to add this number to contacts. "In order to provide such pattern detection features, Apple relied on text recognition modules that process optical character recognition," the report added.
According to details provided by Patently Apple, the system executes contextual processing, while the user interface delivers the "contextual processing command option based on the data type of the pattern in the textual information."
How Would The Next iPhone Look Like?
Some earlier rumors suggested that Apple's sixth generation smartphone, aka iPhone 5, would adopt a teardrop design. If recent rumors are to be believed, the new iPhone would be symmetrical in shape with an aluminum rear panel reinforced by a glossy plastic or rubberized bezel.
A recent post in Patently Apple gave rise to another set of rumors last month suggesting that the iPhone 5 is likely to feature ultrasonic bonding to get stronger. The post said ultrasonic bonding can be useful for making stronger, lasting bond than using adhesives to hold different materials together.
Given that the new iPad has Retina display with a groundbreaking 2048 x 1536 resolution, the next iPhone is also expected to feature something higher in terms of its display. While some recent reports suggest that the phone will sport a large 4.6-inch screen, reports surfaced last week said that Apple would consider the current 3.5-inch screen size. Some other sources also said that the device will sport Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge display with 1280 x 720 resolutions (367ppi). There are reports that suggest that the new iPhone will have an edge-to-edge display, making the smartphone even more appealing for Apple fans.
What Would Be The Key Features in The Next iPhone?
Considering Android smartphones are increasingly coming with 8 megapixel camera, the iPhone 5 is also expected to feature something similar or even higher. Some speak about an 8 megapixel or even 10 megapixel camera and the possibility of taking pictures in the panorama mode. Rumors also suggest that the iPhone 5 will have a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting.
In March, a DigiTimes report cited unnamed sources within the Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturer, who claimed that the next generation iPhone would "very likely" contain an embedded 4G LTE radio. Given that the new iPad came with 4G LTE support, the probability of LTE technology being incorporated in Apple's next iPhone cannot be ignored right away.
