Nokia World 2012 returns to Finland
Nokia World 2012 will see the company head back to Finland, with the show to take place on September 25 and 26 in Helsinki. Apparently confirmed by Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari, Reuters’ Tarmo Virki reports, the show will set the stage for the next phase in the company’s restructuring, after seeing market share and customer interest consumed by rivals like Apple and Samsung. Update: Nokia has confirmed the location and dates

Recent public showings by Nokia have been high-profile. Back at Nokia World 2011 late last year, the company finally unveiled its first Lumia Windows Phones, along with a range of Asha devices targeting “the next billion” users in developing markets. CEO Stephen Elop also promised to have the new devices on the market far faster than Nokia has previously managed.

Meanwhile, at MWC 2012 last week, Nokia not only revealed new Windows Phone models – including its cheapest to-date, the Lumia 610 - but the fruits of five years of imaging research in the shape of the Nokia 808 PureView. Although the 808 runs Nokia Belle, the company has promised the high-resolution technology will soon find its way to future Windows Phone devices.

We’ve asked Nokia for confirmation of the Nokia World plans for this year, but the company tells us it’s not commenting on the dates or location yet. We’ll update when we know more.

Update: Nokia has confirmed the news, with Nokia World 2012 to be held at the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre. Bizarrely it’s the first time the event will be held in Finland. More details here.

Telstra hangs up on some Blackberries
Closure of Telstra’s higher-frequency 3G network is not running as smoothly as hoped, with some Blackberry users finding they may be caught short when Telstra stops offering 3G services at 2100 megahertz.

Customers may have to replace Blackberry devices if they purchased the handsets from another mobile company and then switched to Telstra. This is because Blackberry devices are tuned to the frequencies of each mobile carrier.

While Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all operate 3G networks at the 2100 megahertz (MHz) frequency today, Telstra will offer only 3G at 850 MHz when it exits a network sharing agreement in August.

Read more: http://best-blackberry-mobile-review.blogspot.in/

elstra has only sold phones tuned to the 850 MHz network since 2007, but still had about 170,000 devices using 2100 MHz in October 2010. It has been informing those customers still using the 2100 MHz network of the closure.

One business trapped by the network closure is Questas Corporate, which has 50 Blackberries purchased from Optus and later transferred to Telstra. Chief information officer Ferdinando Cosentino is angry that Telstra is reducing 3G services to one frequency but keep prices constant.

‘‘The real issue is that [the phones] will not ‘‘stop working’’, [but] they will slow down dramatically to 2.5G.

"Devices are two to three years old and we replace them only when they break down. We have a tech fund with Telstra that has sufficient funds to cover the purchase, however that money was supposed to cover future purchases and replacements of phones for years to come, instead it will be depleted significantly,’’ he told BusinessDay.

Buying new Blackberries tuned to NextG would cost $20,000, he added.

Mr Cosentino said returning to Optus was not possible because his business would have to break its three-year contract and lose hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of associated benefits - such as free calls and credits. The Telstra represenative who convinced Questas to leave Optus said the phones would keep working.

‘‘One essential point that has been reiterated in meetings and in documentation produced is that there was never a need to replace our mobile fleet, since using 3G on 2100 MHz bandwidth we would have enjoyed the same or better coverage than Optus. Telstra indeed tried to sell the 850 MHz NextG network, but we elected to upgrade only those handsets requiring better coverage.’’

A Telstra spokeswoman said staff were trained to tell new customers about the upcoming change to network frequencies.

‘‘Unfortunately, in this instance, they don’t appear to have worked. Given this, we will work directly with the customer to agree a resolution ahead of the end of August network changes,’’ she said.

There may be more Telstra customers who find mobiles purchased from other companies no longer work at 3G speeds once the 3GIS agreement ends.

Telstra has been using 2100 MHz for 3G since it entered the 3GIS network sharing agreement with Hutchison 3 in 2004. Telstra then built its NextG network at 850 Mhz and plans to run all 3G services at this frequency while building its new 4G network at 1800 MHz.

Telstra and 3  - now part of Vodafone Hutchison Australia(VHA) - will split the 3GIS base station sites and spectrum between them once the agreement ends, and VHA will continue offering 3G services at 2100 MHz

iPhone 5 Features: A Look at What Lies in Store for the iPhone 5

With the iPad 3 unveiling a near certainty on March 7 in San Francisco, many can’t help but wonder what they can expect from the iPhone 5 when it is finally released. Originally, it was speculated that this would be Apple’s new smartphone due for an October 2011 release, but we all know that didn’t happen. The iPhone 4S, despite not being an “iPhone 5”, nonetheless went on to boost Apple’s sales numbers to record levels in the fourth quarter of last year.

So that would leave us with an iPhone 5 ready to launch sometime this year.

But when will it be launched and what could it possibly fea

Well, the consensus is that it may launch in a special event, perhaps early in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Macotakara. Apple is known for hosting separate events to launch new devices, and that may very well happen this year with the iPhone 5.

Regarding the handset’s potential features, it may be powered by an A6 CPU, as last year’s iPhone 5 came with an A5 processor. This could be twice as fast and powerful as the A5 CPU.

Since the iPad 3 is believed to come with a new iOS platform, it can be assumed that this too will power the iPhone 5. A larger screen (thus addressing a common complaint) and improved battery lifespan are also expected.

These features have yet to be confirmed, of course, but once we find out more, you’ll certainly read about it here.

At Rs 22,990, this seems to be a very reasonably priced high-end handset with equally appealing specification.

Motorola Atrix 2 is now available in India for Rs 22,990. Though it does not have the best of specifications amongst high end smartphones, but it certainly offers the best for the price.

Motorola Atrix 2 comes with a 4.3-inch qHD display with a resolution of 540×960, 1 GHz dual-core processor, 8 GB internal memory which can be expanded to 32GB, 8 megapixel rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front camera as well. The phone is based on Android 2.3 OS
Atrix 2 is also compatible with Motorola's lapdock, which is a laptop shaped docking station that has its own battery and screen but uses phones processing power to deliver laptop like experience. Currently this docking station is not available in India, however with the launch of two compatible devices (Motorola RAZR and Atrix 2) in India, we can expect the lapdock to come to our country very soon.

The well designed Motorola Atrix 2 comes preloaded with EA games. At Rs 22,990, this phone is priced in the close vicinity of phones like HTC Desire HD, HTC Radar (Windows Phone), Blackberry Bold 9780, and Samsung Galaxy R.

BlackBerry to open 4,000 new outlets

BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) plans to open 4,000 outlets across the archipelago to strengthen its market in Indonesia, a RIM executive said.

“We plan to establish 4,000 points of sale, for customers throughout Indonesia to try and to buy BlackBerry products and services,” RIM senior public relations manager for Southeast Asia Oliver Pilgerstorfer told The Jakarta Post in a statement on Monday.

The 4,000 outlets is the target for RIM during the new financial year which started last week and will finish at the end of Feb 2013, he said.

He refused to comment on investment spent to open the outlets, but he said the initiative was in line with the BlackBerry retail stores program where RIM opened dedicated BlackBerry stores with their key partners for customers to get the full BlackBerry experience.

The stores include those opened in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, Roxy Mas, Central Jakarta, and Gandaria City, South Jakarta. (nfo)

iPhone 5 Release Date: Will Galaxy S3 Pose a Threat?
There is no denying that the Smartphone Battle of the Year 2012 will be between two giants, the Apple iPhone 5, and Samsung Galaxy S3, both of which are yet to be released. MWC (Mobile World Congress) came and went and nothing about the Galaxy S3 was shown by Samsung, which means, the company could be playing its cards close to the chest, or waiting to see what Apple has in store before it does anything. Apple on the other hand, remains tightlipped as usual, about what the next generation iPhone will look like or feature, leaving the task of prophesying to the rumor mills. Hence the big debate – which smartphone will be better? iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3?

When both devices are out later this year, the big question that will be on everyone’s lips is which handset will stand tall over the other. It was recently reported that Apple plans an announcement of the iPhone 5 at the World Wide Developer Conference in June 2012 (though others claim iPhone 5 will be unveiled during the fall, much like iPhone 4S). No word on when Samsung plans to announce the Galaxy S3. If the device is a huge upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy S2 as expected, Samsung might just sent out a few invites to its own little thing.

Recent reports have pegged the Samsung Galaxy S3 as a true super smartphone. Specs include a massive 4.8-inch Super AMOLED+ display that is capable of issuing full 1080p video content. Having 1080p playback on a smartphone is all good and dandy, but if it doesn’t do it correctly, then such a device is not worth the cost. We have seen smartphones with 1080p playback before. They were nothing special, but since the Galaxy S3 is rumored to be packing a super fast quad core chip running at 1.5GHz, this might not be the case. Along with mentioned specifications, the device is also expected to release with an 8-megapixel sharp shooter, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

Like us on Facebook

It is clear that from these rumors, the Samsung Galaxy S3 could be one meaty smartphone only to be owned by gods amongst men.

The Apple iPhone 5 is also expected to have a high resolution HD capable of displaying full 1080p HD content just like the iPad 3. Not only that, the device could use the same quad core chipset rumored to feature in the iPad 3, along with iOS 6 at the helm. Multiple rumors suggest the device to come kicking with a 12 megapixel camera, though since this is Apple we’re talking about, the company might view so many megapixels as an overkill, and would likely keep it at 8-megapixels to keep cost down.

There are also rumors of an upgrade to the size of the display from 3.5-inches to 4. A 4-inch iPhone would put the device on the same level as many Android smartphones, and it is likely that 4-inch screen will be around for years to come before it changes. For those who would want LTE, it is highly likely Apple will choose to abandon LTE until the next version after the iPhone 5. Sorry about that boys.

Between the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S 3, which one will take home the grand prize? We are going to say the iPhone 5. Samsung focuses too much on speed and power, while its TouchWiz skin over Android is still clunky. On the other hand, Apple focuses on both hardware and software and does a perfect job in combining those two, and this is why the iPhones feel good in the hand and is so easy to use.

In conclusion, Samsung has a winner in its hands with Galaxy S3, but we doubt whether it will match up to Apple’s own offerings with the iPhone 5.
